“Guys welcome back to another video by nmagpie randoms in this video. I m going going to be talking about icewind dale so at the nmoment those of you who my channel will see that i m doing a current playthrough walkthrough nfor baldur s gate. The baldur s gate series. Which i m going to be taking from the first ngame tales of the sword coast through to siege of dragonspear shadows of amn and then nfinally throne of bhaal.
So the whole series icewind dale playthrough as well and taking nthat from icewind dale through to the heart of winter. The purpose of this video is to ntalk about comparisons between icewind dale and baldur s gate. Now a lot of people compare nthe two and i don t think that s particularly fair. Because even though they re both infinity nengine games.
They both look very similar they re not the same they re actually two ncompletely different games altogether and in this video. I m going to be discussing the nsimilarities and the differences between the two so the first major difference is that nin baldur s gate. You get one main protagonist and you create the protagonist. But all of nthe companions that you come across in the game.
You meet on the way and they join your nparty. So that s the first fundamental difference icewind dale you make your own party from nthe onset. So if you remember the multiplayer from baldur s gate and baldur s gate ii. Where nyou make all your own characters.
It s the same thing in icewind dale. So there s no none main protagonist. There s no one party leader and the way the plot works is very ndifferent as well so you might have heard critics of icewind dale stating that the plot nof icewind dale is very linear. It is compared to baldur s gate.
But it s like comparing napples to oranges. So baldur s gate is an immersive huge multi dimentional story that nencapsulates a lot of different companions they have their own quests they have inter party ninteractions they have romances none of that happens in icewind dale. Because that s nnot. What icewind dale is about icewind dale is what we call a dungeon crawler .
So it s nmore to do with combat. It s more to do with strategy. It s more to do with atmosphere nand environment. A lot of critics.
Say that it has a rubbish or a weak plot that s not ntrue at all it s just it s approached very differently to baldur s gate. The best way nthat. I can describe it is that in baldur s gate. The story happens to you and in icewind ndale.
You happen to the story. The protagonist of baldur s gate. The bhallspawn they are nthust into the story against their own will fate happens to them whereas in icewind dale nthe. Start of the game is that a group of adventurers meet on the road.
They go to a tavern in a nlittle town called easthaven. Which is in the very very north much much further nnorth than baldur s gate. And they re looking for adventure..
.
They re looking for work so nbecause of this you actually get to capitalise upon the characters that you do create in nicewind dale. You can make a really really well rounded party you can make a power party nyou can even set yourself a challenge and have less than ideal stats and a difficult nskill mix. You actually customise how you play your game in icewind dale. So in baldur s ngate.
The story gets told to you you know yes you can choose how you play you can choose nwhat alignment. You play you can choose certain options. But actually. The story is already nthere the foundations are there whereas in icewind dale.
You have to use your imagination na little bit to roleplay. Which is exactly how you do it on pen and paper the dm does nnot give you characters well sometimes they do but on the whole you meet with a group nof. People that have their own npcs that have their own companions that they ve made and nyou guys create an aventuring party and that s more like it is in icewind dale. Actually nit s closer to the pen and paper another major difference that i ve found is with the ncombat icewind dale is very very combat heavy and very combat orientated.
The spells nthat you might have found in baldur s gate might not work the same way in icewind dale nthey. re rules will have changed so it s important that if you did play baldur s gate. And you nwant to play icewind. Dale.
You must read your spell descriptions because spells might not nwork in the same way in baldur s gate. The priest spell chant you can walk around whilst nyou use chant in baldur s gate. Whereas in icewind dale. You re kind of rooted to the nspot also blind the wizard spell blind is a level one spell in baldur s gate.
Whereas. Nit s a level two spell in icewind dale. This has a few implications. So if you import a ncharacter from baldur s gate into icewind dale.
Which you can do by the way. What you ll nfind is that you can memorise the blind spell. But it will not cast. So there s no script nfor that spell to actually cast it doesn t work properly.
So just bear that in mind. Nit can be resolved by un memorising and deleting. It from your spellbook and re memorising the nlevel two spell in baldur s gate. But it s something to bear in mind so for those of nyou.
Who have never played icewind dale. Before and you ve come from baldur s gate. You ll nbe delighted to find that there s more spells. There s actually more spells in icewind dale nand.
They re combat orientated there s a lot of spells that boost stats. There s a lot nmore offensive spells that pertain to combat and combat is hard in icewind dale. The difficulty ncurve in icewind dale is extremely steep compared to baldur s gate icewind dale is about discovering nyour environment looking for treasure defeating enemies getting to the end of dungeons that nsort of thing what i really like about icewind dale..
.
Compared to baldur s gate. Is the fact nthat. The classes are a lot more fleshed out so the druid and the bard in particular rock. Nin icewind dale.
They re given really good spells they work a lot better the bard songs nwork better. The druid spells are much more fleshed out and they re actually closer to nwhat you would expect and they re really done some justice in icewind dale. They sucked npretty badly in the baldur s gate series. Which is a shame because they re two really really ngood classes in icewind dale.
You do get class specific rewards for things. Which is pretty ncool. Another difference. You ll notice if you play the two games is that there s a huge ndifference in art styleand the music s very different as well in baldur s gate.
There nare some moments of beauty for instance ust natha is incredibly beautiful suldanesselar nis incredibly beautiful. But what i personally tend to find is that a lot of the areas in nbaldur s gate. Look a bit brown and a bit generic whereas in icewind dale. The environments nare incredibly beautiful that s something that i will say for icewind dale.
It is a nbeautiful beatiful game everything from the character portraits to the environments nare just beautiful and a lot more realistic and a lot more kind of brutal and raw and nin fact. The whole game is brutal and raw from the beginning of the title screen from the nmusic. It s apparent. It s immediate.
It s as if you re already in battle. It s got a nreal wildness to it baldur s gate encourages kind of like ambling along taking it in nexploring lots of different areas. Whereas. Icewind dale has a real sense of urgency about nit.
It s urging you along it s encouraging you not to stay in one place for too. Long. Nbecause bad guys are everywhere. The music is just so atmospheric.
When you play it neven. If it s a summer day outside. You feel cold. You know this part of the world that nyou re playing in the spine of the world.
It s freezing cold and you feel quite on edge nwhen. You play. And there s a lot more kind of adrenaline pumping through you it s a ntotally different experience. Altogether so i touched on combat earlier.
And i thinks this nreally needs to be reinforced this point that the difficulty curve in icewind dale ncompared to baldur s gate is massive and very steep you will find yourself in trouble if nyour party is not well rounded and you don t play strategically. Swathes and swathes of nenemies will come at you and you ll find yourself drowning in them. Especially there s a ndungeon called dragon s eye where which is sigh..
.
My god not only is it huge nbut there s loads and loads of enemies. That s another thing as well icewind. Dale is a classic ndungeon crawler. You will be crawling through levels and levels of dungeons.
So if dungeons nare. N t your thing icewind dale might not be your thing. This is where i think the game nfell down when it first came out i thinm. This is why it s not as popular as it s predecessor nbaldur s gate that came before it because it wasn t advertised as a different experience nit was kind of assumed that this was an additional story tacked on to the end of baldur s gate.
Nit s actually a different style of play. Altogether. The great thing about icewind dale. Is as nyou re going through these dungeons as you re dealing with these enemies as you re turning nround every corner.
There s a surprise round every corner. So whether it s an absolutely nstunning piece of scenery that branches out before you whether it s treasures that you nfind on the corpse of a dead adventurer. Whether it s a huge telescope with a trapped wizard ninside whether it s some bizarre enemy that you ve never seen before in your life. Whether nit s an ancient tome that you find in an old dusty bookcase at the bottom of some dank ncellar that hasn t been seen for decades or even centuries.
It really feels like you re nan adventurer and you re going into these dungeons. And you re finding things. And it s nreally exciting. Though the plot is a lot more linear and there s not many sidequests nthe quests that are there are really really well thought out you know nothing s wasted nin.
Icewind dale yes. There s not as many areas to explore in terms of the world map n. You can t just kind of trundle along in different places. Like you can in the first nbaldur s gate game.
Another thing that people that have played baldur s gate. Find hugely napparent in icewind dale is how isolated. It is it s empty. Whereas if you re used to nplaying baldur s gate.
If you re used to playing shadows of amn in particular. There s a lot nof people. And there s a lot of things and a lot of hustle and bustle and a lot of life nwhereas in icewind dale. It s quite alonely experience actually.
Which is good and bad nso. Because your party members won t speak to you and there s no kind of inter party ninteraction it can feel quite lonely in that way because of the sheer environment that nyou re in you know you re in the isolated spine of the world the mountains. There s nonly tiny little villages in between i think that really adds to the atmosphere that s nwhat. It s supposed to be you know you re pioneers you re adventurers setting out in nthis.
Brave new world in this dangeorus terrain it actually reminds me a lot of the old text nbased adventures. Where you have to use your imagination. Another thing is that icewind ndale was clearly a labour of love because every single background has descriptions nyou..
.
Know they ve got the little question mark you click on it and it talks about what s nthere. It can be something as mundane as a vial that s sitting in a shop or some old nleather handbags. That aren t particularly well made or craggy terrain or there s an neerieness and it s almost like you ve got a dm explaining the environment to you whereas. Nin baldur s gate.
You do have some of these little question mark things to click on and nit. ll give you decriptions of the environment. But nowhere near as much as icewind dale ni. Suppose one of the fundamental differences in my opinion is that baldur s gate can be nplayed by people who aren t into dungeons and dragons it can be played by people who naren t into strategic combat play it can be played for its story icewind.
Dale conversely nfeels a lot more like pen and paper d d. It s a lot more and a dungeon crawl. It s for people nthat like strategic combat. And it requires a lot of research.
So you need to read up non your classes read up on your spells in order to get the best outcomes in the game nyou can t really charge into icewind dale. Without knowing what you re doing because nwhat. ll happen is you ll choose characters that don t mesh well together or you ll not nplay strategically and you ll end up getting to a point in the game where you physically ncannot progress because it s too hard baldur s gate. You can actually cheese your way through nquite a bit of it.
But icewind dale. You can t do that it s really unforgiving and brutal nand. I actually love that i love a challenge. But some people might be really put off by nthat that makes it more rewarding and i think that the quests and the plot are actually nreally really interesting a lot of people don t like its plot.
Because it s quite linear nand. It s quite impersonal as well because the characters aren t made by the game and ndon t have backstories and don t have inter party interaction don t have romances and because nthere s no protagonist. There s no player character as such it can feel quite impersonal nand. Quite lonely as i said before it s not very well populated personally.
I think it s na terrible shame that icewind dale. Didn t get as much publicity as baldur s gate. Did nand a lot of people have judged. It based upon their experiences with baldur s gate.
Beamdog ndid. A really really good job with the enchanced edition. Similar to the baldur s gate enhanced nedition so if you haven t played icewind. Dale please please do give it a try you ll either nlove it or you ll hate it one of the two it s not viewed as favourably as it s baldur s ngate cousin.
The problem is that baldur s gate was so amazing. It was such an amazing ngame that anything that come after it kind of paled in comparison. Which is what i think nhappened with icewind dale. If you re not sure about trying the game you could watch nme play it for a bit search youtubr for other icewind dale playthroughs and see if it s nfor you thanks for watching and i look forward.
