Hes one of the air traffic controllers down here in brisbane. Hes gonna be basically running the simulator session hopefully putting me through my paces to see whether i can do what hes been trained for many many years to it to actually do for a living. What happens in this simulator here.
What kind of training do you do down here. Well. This ones set up for the new runways which were building is just so current stuff can get ready for the parallel runway procedures.
Which come into place next year. And also we do compromise separations. So aircraft have issues hmm never returned the controls how to react in this thing.

What are we gonna be expecting today so were gonna put you in the tower seat so were gonna deal with departures duty departure gaps when to go sort of judge how much room youve got if you get one away and obviously arrivals just processing them looking at whats going on the bad girl. So no one can come in on any runway at this point. And they happens fast. I know i kept getting the runway wrong.
I kept calling it 0 1. But little things like that matter dont they theres zero well rights or whatever soar new terminology. So thats we can forgive that one just i mean we dont have a left where theyre getting the posts ready for right moving the strips.
All the time youve got to constantly thats one thing is when were checking people upstairs. We watch the street movements and they always gonna look at whos on your own way now you know and why isnt that strip. There why can he be care to take off when it still says very pregnant yeah.
So whats happening here is going to match. Whats happening out the window. Theres just training concentrating it so we have the college.
So you know they teach these skills. The skills they test for to start with so youre gonna have them within yourself. So you bring them out also if youve flown around australia long enough you might recognize.

So im more than used to lots of light aircraft rather than being quite busy and so. Yeah you might recognize my voice lots of flying schools. There which help me judge gaps.

What made you want to get into air traffic control in the first place then me personally it was a my sister. The time was seeing someone was the controller was that a loss what i wanted to do i backpacked. So when to spend time with him in the uk.

Youre looking out the window. Like most people when theyre young wasnt quite sure what i wanted to do then ill give this a go and here. I am.
And any tips then any tips for aspiring air traffic controllers out there i know i get a lot of you know younger potential pilots and potential atcs people you might just want to get into the aviation industry do you love your job as i love it yeah. This its never the same you do get the routine days.
And things. But it was gonna be one step ahead just in case you know things dont go to plan. I love the change.
I love not taking the work home do you still get excited going to airports. When you work in air traffic control or are you just over it or do you still love the planes now i am as they say aviation heads. I like looking at the aircraft.
I love it when something unusual comes in and this year. Im going to have one air show again so a group of us can go down. There to control for the air show.

Theres so many acronyms and everything in aviation plus. Ab initio is our finished down in melbourne. They come up here get sent up here to brisbane.
And they get put on to a sector. But before they talk to live traffic. I come in here and we train them on simulated traffic for about six weeks.
So theres some extra training. We got here in mind. What would they be working on there theyre working on their new voice switching system.
Which is being introduced to the operational room at the end of next month. So while they are current controllers. Who are using the old system are now in the sim doing their i guess theyre at their workbooks and their training to be ready to go for the end of the month.
Now i have spoken about this on the channel before because i know a lot of you watching are often very interested in a career in air traffic control was wearing a career with air services. Now if someone is watching this and theyre thinking right thats it thats definitely what i want to do for a career. Whats the kind of path.
What would you say is kind of a good starting point for look a really good starting point is to get onto our website. And just have a look at whats available. We have coming up next month day.
Were going to be doing a new intake for ab initio. So basically someone thats come in off the street to air services and will be trained as a air traffic controller the training takes approximately 18 months. Thats all conducted down in our initial sim in in melbourne.
And then staff are then put out of a field around australia. And then youll get sent to somewhere like us here in brisbane. And you know the training you might end up down here in this in this very room.
We do do testing so for anyone. Thats thats interested we do have a set of tests that you can do online and that will basically let you know whether you have the aptitude to do the job or not you do need to have some mathematical skills. You dont need to be a professor in maths.
But you you do need to have some basic math skills so quite basic maths but you need to be you know proficient at that so ill link down below. If you look in the description. Theres a couple links down there into the air services website itself.
