lowendgaming This is a topic that many people are looking for. savegooglewave.com is a channel providing useful information about learning, life, digital marketing and online courses …. it will help you have an overview and solid multi-faceted knowledge . Today, savegooglewave.com would like to introduce to you Can you run Half Life: Alyx on an integrated GPU?. Following along are instructions in the video below:
“Video is brought to you by curiositystream nand. An exciting thing called nebula. I have have made it no secret that i am fascinated nby vr what a lot of are banking as the future nof gaming had a rough start after some attempts from bigger game publishers that varied in nquality from ok to questionable then indie developers picked up the slack and started ndelivering some of the first true vr best sellers. And then valve of all people valve comes back nfrom their hiatus of not making new games.
No i am not counting you to do a new half life a game a new half life game that is vr only we truly are the ends of times. Which of course represent an interesting issue ndue to the increased cost associated with vr on one side. There is the headset a game like half life. Alyx uses full 6 degrees.
Nof freedom with tracking for hands and head which is difficult and expensive to do google cardboard samsung vr wii remotes nand a lot of things people think as vr just aren t able to track position in space. Which nleaves us with a very small number of options. While the entry cost of a high quality headset nhas slowly come down mostly due to facebook willingness to drop obscene amounts of money nto bankroll its development. It is still pricy for a lot of people and its recent success nhas lead to a widespread availability issue.
Which is compounded nby delays on the manufacturing of new headsets for like no reason no reason whatsoever for years. The only truly accessible choice nwhere older windows mixed reality headsets. But their disappointing commercial results nmean you can often only find them used and only cheap in the united states everywhere. Else prices go a bit insane.
I got mine used while visiting the us for about 200 nand. It was definitely worth it as it works perfectly for this game. But you might not nbe. So lucky sadly.
This is only a problem that can be solved nwith. Time as cheaper. Options become available. There are experimental ways of getting full nspacial tracking with a phone or google cardboard using a kinect.
But my experiments on getting nthis to work enough for alyx have not been terribly successful. Just yet. There will also likely be in the near future nmods to play this game without vr. Although based on what i have played i will nwarn you that they will have to automate so many actions that they might make the game njust no very good and definitely boring.
But that is a topic for another day. The other side of the cost issue is the computer nthat will run the game. Virtual reality games have a fair reputation nfor being heavier than a lot of regular pc games i find that most people usually exaggerate nthese minimum requirements as i have been able to play vr games on cheaper pcs on this nchannel. Before and the official requirements for alyx are nnot as high as many would think there are not even that far from those of doom eternal the difference.
However is on the margin nof error. If there are frame drops on a conventional ngame like doom eternal you just can soldier on and perfectly play at 30 fps. If you get very sudden frame drops in vr you nget motion..
Sick what level of performance. Do you need not nto get motion sick well that can depend per game and per person. Oculus headsets have a refresh rate of 72 nhz and 80 hz. So that seems like a good mainstream.
Point of comparison. I have blind tested 60 fps vr on a lot of nfriends and have yet to hear of anyone complaining or getting sick. And i have personally have noted that with nsome practice. I can stomach 45 50.
Fps for relatively long periods of time. However all of those experiments. Where running nvisually simpler games. Like super hot and half life.
Alyx is half life is on a different level of complexity nso making it work at any framerate over 30 is going to take some work on a lower end npc. And it is going to take some stomach to be able to play it in vr. So can i get it to work on an integrated ngpu integrated. Gpus are usually cheaper weaker nand.
More thermally constricted compared to dedicated gpu and their lack of fast dedicated nvideo memory makes them extremely unideal for an environment. Where fps drops could be na. Health. Hazard.
Recent vega based amd integrated gpus on cheaper. Nryzen and athlon are quite good for a lot of regular games. And the ryzen 3400g with nvega. 11 graphics would be the ideal option for this experiment.
As i have successfully nplayed lighter vr games on it on previous videos. Problem is that it has increased in price ndramatically lately and i left mine in my office and i like can t leave my apartment nat. The moment however i did bring my 3200g this still 100 quadcore that comes equipped with nvega. 8 integrated graphics that in most comparisons do not come down much behind.
The vega 11 in raw performance. And more importantly it can overclock with the stock cooler like a beast. My specific chip is able to reach 1750 mhz non. The core clock before it starts artifacting and it still has pretty usable temperatures.
I will pair it with 8 gb of dual channel. Ram. Nat..
2666 mhz. However just trying the game like this on the lower settings is setting it for failure. Interestingly enough. While things look normal nin.
The expectator screen in the headset. Tracking would be failing and the image would be moving naround insanely. But if you have followed this channel for na while you know that is not the end of the story half life alyx is the first big game to be nreleased on valve s esoteric source. 2.
Engine. The successor to valve s legendary source source. 2. Has been relatively unused dota.
2. Got ported to it and artifact is the nonly new game running it apart from a short demo game on the lab robot nrepair. Most of valve s vr experiments. So far have nbeen running on unity thankfully this game follows half life s track nrecord of having a user accessible developer console to enable this you have to go to your launch noptions on steam and add the commands console and vconsole and then once in game press.
The tilda. Key located under nor over the escape. Key and next to the one to open this handy tool. If you do not have an english keyboard as ni do in several on my pcs.
You might have to set english as a keyboard option in windows ntemporarily and switch for this to open. Yes. I find it very annoying. Too from here you can do disable a lot of stuff nfrom.
The game big and small for example the decals that appear when objects nare damaged such as bullet holes are controlled by vr render decals which when set to 0 disables nthat completely or something a bit more useful for performance a lot of the shadows in the game are baked nin. But a lot of the dynamic objects cast dynamic shadows which can be disabled by setting nr shadows 0. A lot of scenes in the game are outside how pretty you can disable the entire sky with r drawskybox n0 or you can disable the rendering of most objects nwith r drawworld 0. Which i am in a hell of my own making quite literally ok maybe skip that one here is another questionable.
But more useful ncommand this game uses direct lights in specific dark nscenes that you need to explore with a flashlight you can disable direct lights for a very important nboost in performance. But you have to be aware that it will break these scenes. I will be using this command later on because nquite. Honestly what i am trying to do requires all the help i can get.
But use this one with ncare. I have also compiled a lot of other useful ncommands for disabling effects and other small bits into a file that you can find in the ndescription. The cool thing is that you don t really nneed to deal with the console or anything you can just rename that file as autoexec nand..
Then the game will run it automatically on boot at the end of the file. I have a command that nshows fps in the game s spectator pc screen. So you can know if it was applied or not there are lots and lots of commands in this nconsole and a lot of them are from other past games or future games and therefore do not nwork on this one. However if you find anything that actually nworks and does a change send me a tweet.
Interestingly enough in that same folder nthere is a video config file. That has some variables that did not do anything when tried nrealtime in the console. But that worked when changed here for example ragdoll maxcount sets. The max nnumber of death body ragdolls in the world set that to 0.
And what will happen in practice nis that when you kill and enemy its body will disappear. Relatively quickly so it minimizes nthe amount of actives bodies lying around this is useful in a number of fight scenes. Most interesting is texture steam max resolution nwhich basically seems to control texture resolution setting it to a low number like 16. Does this nbeautiful thing where you are now fully virtually immersed in a world of super low graphics.
Nand low quality grass. This is great especially considering how much trouble this ngame has with lack of fast vram this might be kinda useless for dedicated ngpus. But when using slower ram. As vram.
It can make a difference finally. Most vr games do not have a resolution nsetting. But on steam vr you can in general or in a per game. Basis force the game to render nat.
A percentage of full resolution. So i cut. It 48 percent enough preamble time to actually try this thing in an integrated ngpu here is a needed disclaimer. I do not recommend you try this exactly as ni do i know i can stomach low framerates in vr nbut.
My objective here was to see if it was possible at all and if we could all learn something nfrom it that was useful in setup that not as dramatically under the minimum requirements nas this one isn t the art of this game just beautiful marvelous while framerate was lower than i hopped. I nwas surprised by several things. The first is that the game was working and nchugging along even when it seemed it could not and the second is that the tracking was nactually working quite well in past experiments. One of the things that ni see failing often on integrated gpus when doing low framerate vr on this headset is nhand tracking hands would just fly away or general aiming nwould be very difficult.
But i do not know what sort of trickery valve nhas been doing here. But i was able to shoot and aim just as effectively as i could in na. More capable pc windows mixed reality headsets in my experience ncan struggle a little bit when throwing things. But even this after a bit of practice worked nfine 90 of the time.
The occasional failure of hand tracking did nlead to some occasional issues. But nothing that could not be managed. I cannot express how surprised i am of how well this is working oh of course..
I got bold and wanted to see if nthings will continue to work on heavier gun combat. And here is where i started seeing nalarmingly low under 30 fps framerates and yet even with all of that i managed to stomach nit the game manage to render it nothing crashes. And i was able to fight decently enough nalmost still i can not say this enough. I don t recommend you try this absurd experiment nspecially.
If you have not put a lot of hours into vr before to get used to motion sickness nbut. All that i have explored on this video might be useful. If you have something like na low end dedicated gpu and still want to experience this game because we all need escapes on these weird ntimes. I certainly appreciated an opportunity to virtually leave my apartment for this game.
I was doing fine and another distraction that i have greatly appreciated is this thing tom scott. This fantastic youtuber that you nhopefully know did this amazing game show called money where a bunch of youtubers collaborate nfor real money in games designed to demolish their confidence in each other it is fantastic. It had me at the edge of nmy seat it features friends and colleagues of mine nthat. You might have noticed in the back of videos nlike.
This one before it is so good. This is show is one of the new original series nyou can find in nebula. A new streaming platform for premium content nmade by a group of youtubers including myself for our current backlog and our more premium nexperimental stuff that just doesn t quite fly in youtube. I myself have some ambitious plans that i nam going to execute.
When i can safely fly again anyway. We are labouring to keep the entry ncost into nebula low. But i can offer a way for nyou to get in for free you see we partnered with curiosity stream while nebula is for the best original experiment nby us.
