Of the quirkier parts of the great gatsby is a character called owl eyes. Who who we meet in chapter three. The first meeting with allies takes place at gatsby one of gatsbys tremendous parties.
Its the first party that nick goes to he and jordan are searching for gatsby. Which is no accident in this particular section and they enter one of gatsbys rooms. Which turns out to be the library and they find this on a chance we tried an important looking door and walked into a high gothic library paneled with carved english oak and probably transported complete from some ruin overseas.
A stout middle aged man with enormous owl. Eyed. Spectacles was sitting somewhat drunk on the edge of a great table.
Staring with unsteady concentration at the shelves of books. As we entered. He wheeled excitedly about and examined jordan from head to foot all right.
So theres a couple things that we need to note here. In this odd little encounter. He has enormous owl eyed spectacles.
He is drunk okay somewhat drunk. And he is staring at the bookshelves. This is in a library.
Which had been probably transported complete from some ruin overseas. Many wealthy people did that in america. They would bring things all the way over from europe.
All the way to america to have this sense of splendor and opulence and so the guys sitting there looking at this opulent bookshelf.
Now. The thing. That stands out again.
Is his owl eyed spectacles. Where. Oh.
Where have we seen spectacles. Before. Oh yes.
I remember. Where weve seen spectacles before. We have seen them here.
Ah yes. Thats right on the billboard. Thats the only other place that we see spectacles in the entire novel now the relationship between these two things could very well just be a coincidence.
But how lies is gonna pop up at a very strange place later on in the text could he be the incarnation of god in the in the text probably not but some scholars do believe that thats whats going on there. And you know i tend to enjoy that that idea that somehow fitzgerald put this this drunken idiot as some form of god in the middle of his book. Again no offense intended this is all fitzgerald.
But anyways so this this idea that somehow he is great and powerful and can see more deeply than others at the very least is suggested by the spectacles. So if we continue forward we get this next passage. What do you think he demanded impetuously about what he waved his hands toward the bookshelves about that as a matter of fact you neednt bother dicer tain.
I ascertained theyre real the books.
He nodded. Absolutely real have pages and everything i thought theyd be a nice durable cardboard matter of fact theyre absolutely real pages in here here here let me show you see he cried triumphantly. Its a bonafide piece of printed matter.
It fooled. Me this fellas. A regular burlesque.
Oh. Its a triumph. What thoroughness what realism knew when to stop two didnt cut the pages.
But but what do you do what do you expect so this guys going on and on about the books. And how they are real that they have real pages that theyre absolutely real. This is an interesting little moment in the book.
He calls gatsby. A belasco now belasco was a famous producer of a theater in the time. And he was quite well renowned for his his attention to detail.
And whats being suggested here is that gatsby is all a show that he is not somehow real that everything is an illusion. But the illusion is so good that its now crossed over to becoming real and and heres heres the deal with this in the 1920s. You know lots of people lot lots of people but a good number of people became wealthy overnight and they needed to show how wealthy they were and one of the ways to do that was to have a library.
You know theres no computers. Theres no internet. Theres no movies cds.
So you have a library to show that youve collected something of value. But theyre just actually werent that many books so oftentimes people in that day and age would create these fake libraries with these books that are just for show there. Theres theres nothing behind them.
Its just the front. These are all empty spaces and they they just stand out there looking like real books. But theyre not and certainly they would do this in in theaters.
As well you know ive certainly been in a number of productions. Where we had those on bookshelves to make it look like real books. So again.
The guy is fascinated by the fact that this whole show that gatsby is putting on is real and the line between whats real and whats illusion is definitely blurry. Here and indeed. Fitzgerald wants that to be and again.
Its blurry with who this guy allies is is he a god is he a regular drunk person is there somewhere where in the middle that he is its very unclear here so what do we need to do summarizing. This owl lies. He conspicuously has glasses and weve seen that before only one other place in that billboard that that nihilistic billboard suggesting god is an illusion.
Hes drunk he says hes been on a bender for a good week at this point. A little later in the text. Hes fascinated by gatsbys books and again.
Theyre supposed to be fake. But theyre not and gatsby is a showman. But he goes to such lengths.
That the show has become real. Its the best way to put it and allies will return again at some point in the novel. .
