“Everyone s been sent back photography. Here and today. We are looking at a portrait portrait session. I did at night time with my new young lo yn 300.
Constant now. I m a really big fan of doing nighttime portraits with fast low aperture prime lenses because first of all at night time your backgrounds are going to be generally dark. So it really pulls focus towards the subject of your photo. But also using low aperture.
Lenses particularly prime lenses with our aperture of f11 for our 48 gives you beautiful blurry backgrounds with lovely colorful blobs of light so the equipment i used for this photoshoot was my sony a7r 2. Camera body coupled with a sigma mc 11 adapter. So i could use my canon. Lenses on the sony as well as a sigma 50.
Mil f. 14 non art. Lens i also used a sigma 85mm 14 lens for some of the photos as well as this i used my young lo yn. 300.
Constant light and a cheap ebay stand. I got for about 20 bucks. So a little bit about the location. I chose for this photo shoot at night.
It s quite difficult to find an interesting setting for thought rates. Because often background will be so dark you and actually be able to see any detail. So what i decided to do was find a location. Where the background was full of different colored light and on the background to be distracting.
Which is why i use a low aperture for this photo shoot. But having a lot of different colored lights in the background made for some really colorful and beautiful bouquet in the background of these portraits. Another reason. I chose this location is as you can see there are a few lights just surrounding us.
So as well as having the yn 300 constant light on my subject..
I also had a bit of fill light available from the surrounding lamps. So the photo. We re looking at today was shot at an aperture of f. 14.
With a shutter speed of 1 one sixtieth of a second and an iso of 250. Now i used a 50 mil sigma 14. For most of this photo. Shoot but this photo is actually taken on a 85 mil.
14. By sigma. So the reason. I used in a virtue of f.
104. Is because the lower aperture you have the mobile over your background is going to be compared to the sharpness of your subject and for this image. I really wanted to absolutely blow out the background until you a complete lobby blurry mess. The reason i used a shutter speed of one one sixtieth of a second is because that is a shutter speed.
I m confident that i won t shake the camera enough to cause any shakiness in the image. And it gives my model a little bit of leeway to move around a little bit without causing any blurriness in the image. And the reason. I used an iso of 250 is because with my other previous settings that perfects the exposure triangle to have a perfect exposure in my image.
As well as having a low iso means that i have a crisp clean image. Without any noise here is a lifetime diagram for the image. I ve also added the lamp as yellow dots and then all the colored lights from the traffic lights and shop lights etc in the background on there as well you can see the lamps of the yellow dots and then all the other lights in the background. As just those colored globes on the diagram.
So we used a young dro y and 300 as the light on a subject that was positioned 45 degrees to the right and above of the subject and that created a nice depth to the image. Giving our subject. Some shadows on her left side and light on her right side. So one thing worth noting about this photo.
Shoot is that i use manual focus the entire time and that s because i ve found my sony a7r..
2. Coupled with the mc 11 adapter. It s not very good at focusing particularly when you re using sigma lenses below an aperture of about f 2. And fit.
I was shooting at an aperture of f11 for i pretty much thought there was no chance that my sigma s are going to be able to focus on one point for which is what i found in the past. And because my a7 r2 has focus peaking. It s really not much of an issue to use manual focus particularly when i m shooting a subject that isn t moving very and for that reason. I use manual focus and i just like to say that this is not only true for a seven artoo s but probably for a whole bunch of other cameras particularly if you re using non native lenses in this day and age auto.
Focusing systems are extremely good particularly. In. Dslrs however whenever you re shooting at an aperture of. 216 even 14.
And below your autofocus system might be quite inaccurate. So it s worth considering just using manual focus could be a lot of fun it can be more accurate and using all the focus of learn features and it s just that most skill to have if you ever decide to buy lenses. That don t have auto focus. So here s the photo straight out on the camera.
Let s hop into photoshop and see what we can do to make this image really pop so the first thing. I did was add just a little bit of clarity to the entire image to really make the subject pop from the background and i played with the shadows slightly to make the background. A bit brighter added. Some vibrance and then reduce the white slightly to stop clicking highlights on the subjects.
Face. Then i made the exposure of the image. Overall a little bit brighter and now i m using the brush tool just to select all of the background as i m going to make the background. A little bit more colorful just to make the image.
A little bit more bright punchy and stand out. I haven t seen any other photo shoppers use this technique. So i m going to explain it a little bit basically what i m doing is i m clicking the brush tool in camera raw and then setting the exposure and the blacks to 100 just so when i click anywhere it just shows a black blob showing me which part of the scene. I ve selected what s i ve selected all the parts that i want to have selected i then get rid of the minus 100 exposures and blacks and to any of the changes that i wish to make and it will change exactly where i have selected.
I really wanted this image to be warm and has a nice orange and yellow color palette..
So i decided to make all of the background of the image either extremely yellow. Extremely pink or a selection of both just to really warm up the image and give it a nice yellowy orange tone. So now i m using the same technique as i did before and i m just going to highlight the subjects face and all the areas that aren t particularly. Smooth.
Now this model has very good skin in general there s just a couple of little blemishes here in there. So i selected all of the parts of the face. Which i wish to smooth out and they also included a part of her chest as well and then just removed. Some of the clarity in that part of the image.
I also dropped the white on her face. As well slightly just to smooth out any of the harsh. Clipping highlights from my constant life. The next thing.
I did was added. Some clarity and a little bit of exposure. As well as some more white s to the model s eyes just to make her eyes really pop as they were the focus of the image and they are also what i focused on with my. Lens because you and because i was using a very low aperture of 14.
The only thing in the image that was really on in focus were her eyes and her lips. Which are on the same local planners. Her eyes as well now you ve got to be very. Careful you don t overcook.
The processing on a models eyes. Now. I am definitely guilty of doing this i m always really making the eyes pop and making them super bright and i think that s one of the weaknesses of my photography. So my advice is just to do it very slightly.
See how it looks maybe add a little bit more if you don t think they are quite bright and sharp enough and then come back to it later and make sure that you re not just absolutely destroying the image by giving your model laser beam eyes so the next thing. I did was just added a little bit of luminance to the red and to the oranges in the image. And that was mainly just to make the model skin tone. A little bit more realistic and a little bit more aesthetically proving.
When i took this photo straight out of camera..
I wasn t quite happy with me with the colorado s of her skin. So i just made a little bit of a change until. I was happy with it so that everything i did in camera roll now to jump into native photoshop and start editing from that the first thing. I noticed when i jumped into photoshop is that the background was a little bit noisy just cuz.
I boosted the shadows in camera raw. Even though. I used an iso of 250 because the background was so dark. Even bringing the shadows up a little bit did start to introduce a bit of grain into the image.
So what i ve done is i ve selected my model inverse. The selection and then just d speckled the background to smooth out any noise. There was to be seen next thing. I did was with the same selection as dd speckle.
I added some gaussian blur to my image just around my subject to really make my subject pop and then i moved the selection over slightly. And did another gaussian blur and the reason. I moved the selection over was so i didn t have a hard line. Where the blur started and stopped after that i just cleaned up the models chest and a bit on her face as well with the patch tool pretty much just using the patch tool to circle areas that were not smooth and then dragging that selection into an area that was smooth to smooth the skin out and finally the last thing.
I did which you will probably not want to do is is i removed some contrast from the entire image. Now the reason. I did this is because the monitor. I m using at the moment isn t calibrated.
And it has a bias to add contrast to anything it displays. So i ve learnt that i just need to remove a little bit of contrast from all of my images just to make them the appropriate contrast on hm eric the screen.
