Today, savegooglewave.com would like to introduce to you Instagram Tutorial The Flat Lay. Following along are instructions in the video below:
“Lee s are the perfect excuse to use your camera every day in a fun fun and creative way. This is how i do my flat lays. The first thing ll need is a backdrop anything and everything can be a backdrop. But i tend to stick with simple backdrops to help items in the file a stand out more a budget friendly option that i like to use is cardstock cardstock is great because it can be purchased at your local office supply store and is usually pretty inexpensive.
If you d like to invest more into a backdrop you can purchase my personal favorite. A muslin pop out backdrop this backdrop is particularly nice for larger flat lays and unlike. The paper backdrop the muslin pop out can be easily cleaned and stored next. We need a light source.
A good light source will separate good pictures from great ones for flat leis. I like to simply shoot with indirect light coming from a window window light is nice..
Because it can produce amazing light and best of all it s free now. Everyone s window will be different. But just make sure the sun is in casting light directly on to your subjects. This will give us low contrast and soft shadows.
Allowing the subjects to retain more details the last thing you ll need is a camera. I shoot with a dslr for a faster workflow. But make no mistake good pictures can be had from smaller cameras and phones for camera settings. We want to shoot out a relatively fast shutter.
Speed especially for your hand holding to prevent camera shake and blurry. Photos..
I like to say above 1 100. Of a second when shooting flat lays to ensure sharp pictures moving on to aperture. We want to use an aperture of f 4. Or smaller.
This will give us a wider depth of field ensuring that all objects in the flat lay aren t focus finally moving on to the flat lay itself. I ll start by saying that there are no hard rules for flat lays. But here are some simple guidelines that i use to help reduce my flat laze first let s talk about negative space. Negative space is a space around or between objects and is just as important as objects themselves be mindful of the spacing between objects when doing your flat laze as less negative space tends to create a cozier environment.
While more negative space between items will create a more open environment. After that it really is all trial and error..
I like to start with the bigger items first then place the smaller items around them making. Small tweaks to each item as i add another take more photos than you think you need so when we do go to edit you will have more options to choose from to edit. I use lightroom for both iphone and mac. It s a great easy to use app and allows you to take raw photo z with your phone.
The first thing i ll edit is the exposure and white balance just to get to a good starting point. I ll use exposure to bring up brightness. Then the white balance to either add or subtract warmth. My main goal when editing a flat lay is to preserve details details such as texture and text really help your objects stand out.
I use the highlights and shadows sliders to bring back any details that might have gotten lost highlights can help recover washed out details on a photo and shadows can help bring out details in underexposed areas after that i ll focus on contrast. But i won t touch the contrast slider to add contrast..
I ll use the white and black sliders. This essentially does the same thing as the contrast slider. But will give you way more control now. I usually dance around with these four sliders until i find a nice balance between details and contrast.
Here are the final edits from both my dslr and a phone as you can see you can take great photos with anything i hope you found these tips useful. And remember these are just guidelines. So don t be afraid to experiment. I d be interested to see what you guys come up with so if you end up using any of these flat late tips use hashtag hyuga and i ll be sure to repost some of my favourites later thanks for watching.
And i ll see you guys in the next one ” ..
