We’re back with another episode of before you buy that show we give you you some straight up gameplay and our first impressions of the latest games are really today. We’re talking about mech warrior. 5.
One last before you buy video for 2019 as you know we get closer to the holiday season. We were actually gonna stop. But a lot of you reached out and we’re curious about mech warrior.
5. So we figured one more quickie before you buy for 2019 now keep in mind. This is very much first impressions and this gameplay captured is from the early hours of the game.
But it seems like mech warrior. 5. Is a solid met game.
It’s from piranha games. And with their last foray being mechwarrior online.
My experience with the series overall is kind of all over the place to be honest you know just so at least you know my approach my perspective. I played mech warrior. 3.
Many many moons ago our ips for interactive and then i played that lone wolf. One from 2004. But mech warrior.
5. Serves as the first main line numbered entry since 2000. This is a long running series that has kind of bounced around with how hardcore.
It is and 5 here seems to at least to me serve as a fun entry point. It’s focused on a single player or cooperative action. And it’s all about mech combat and management.
It’s straightforward that’s it man the game definitely doesn’t hold your hand the tutorial is extremely brief and really only gives you the rough fundamentals. It took me a few more hours to pick up on the more nuanced stuff with aiming and targeting and navigation.
Because all of it is a little deeper than you’d expect it’s a game that is surprisingly okay to jump into. But it takes a little bit more learning to really get the ins and outs down to stuff like the way you move or accelerate your robot. I mean you control the torso and the legs independently and have separate keys for lining the back up they kind of accelerate more like a car than just like a character you move around with on a joystick and if you’re someone out.
There. Who maybe has never touched a game like this it’s a nice little change of pace. But you just gotta get used to it you got to learn trial by fire and i think that’s where the fun lies here and now funny enough the game.
Doesn’t really make the greatest first impression like the first big scene after the tutorial looks kind of rough and just feels weird and then the first initial characters you meet kind of just seemed lifeless really honestly. It’s all about just kind of outfitting mack and getting your next mission and the story stuff in between just doesn’t quite do it for me and also elias to fix this if that’s how you say his name he drops in as a character. He’s the voice actor behind adam jensen.
From deus. Ex. And that was kind of awesome.
Know what i was getting at is that at first really quickly the game starts slow you get access to smaller faster. Less capable mechs and the good larger scale battles come a little later on.
But i like the moment to moment gameplay. You know you can swap on the fly between first and third person view depending on your optics. You can mouse wheel zoom in and out extremely smoothly a mix stomp around and clunky and have real weight to them weapon impacts are incredibly satisfying from a visual and a feedback standpoint.
Timing. Your cooldowns and shooting and targeting while strafing. Strategically is key here and pulling off shots.
Feels good environments can be large. But also seem kind of boring. Though although i don’t know what else they could do with them since they’re not really the focus thankfully.
There is plenty of destruction of buildings and rocks and other stuff that kind of makes up for it for me also visually the game is inconsistent now on the positive side of it i love the hangar and i love the star map. It all looks amazing and when you’re in the hangar. The sense of scale and the moving parts for the mechs coupled with just some nice lighting and effects these are the areas of the game.
Where it just really truly looks the best cuz otherwise like the detail is there but often out in the battlefield and in cutscenes and stuff the textures. Look extremely flat and make the game look really dated you know it’s serviceable sure smooth yeah.
But kind of all over the place and disappointing and thankfully. There’s a lot to keep you busy and i’m joined what’s on offer like you level up your pilot. But the important stuff is the mechs themselves you have multiple slots that outfit.
A bunch of different parts and weapons you pick up along the way and it’s all in a pretty slick and easy to use menu you can even drag and drop stuff you can customize your mech with layers of different paint colors as well as a bunch of different designs to stick on this is all kick ass because in the hangar you can freely walk around look up and see your mechs from the eyes of the little pilot on the ground. You know all of the details and even the damage you receive during a mission is all visible here. And it’s just really really cool.
If you like big robot and speaking of damage and all that everything here is focused around the economy. Your currency buying and selling stuff and managing repair costs and how long the repairs or upgrades will take this is all accessed via terminal. Which is then also your mission planning terminal.
Where you take on new contracts you can negotiate how much you get paid upon completion. How much insurance you get paid out to help cover the cost of the damage to your mac. And then you head out on a variety of different mission types.
Sometimes hunting things down sparring with larger or just a bunch of other smaller opponents that sometimes attacking and destroying buildings and sometimes defending them. Sometimes you have allies of which you can give commands which they’re honestly kind of dumb sometimes still the stuff they make you go out.
And do is fun because the core gameplay mechanic of piloting. Your robot is so satisfying. You know.
This is a classic pc gamers pc. Mech game. But in 2019.
It stays true to what it is it doesn’t really tear anything out or fluff. It up too much mech warrior. 5.
Is what it is and it seems like it has no shame. It knows what type of player. It’s for but again.
This is just a brief overview. I’m curious to see where people will actually take this one.
Like if that player that this game is designed for you know are they actually gonna really want it the hardcore met crowd from utilizing. More of the coff stuff to playing with a full control. Stick rig.
Which is really how it should be played that’s just the stuff. I can’t quite judge on here. You know will it be embraced will people buy it on the epic game store front.
I don’t know but at first glance and sometime with it it’s a fun mech warrior game that is a very much mech warrior. It feels good it looks decent. And there’s plenty of mech fanservice is that a thing so the game is pretty ok you know it doesn’t seem to blow the doors down on anything.
And it can use some tweaks here. And there which i think the developers will definitely keep up on i’ve seen some complaints of balancing and and you know i definitely think that a i needs to be approved big time. But yeah i think it’s fairly decent fun.
But i know mech fans have a very particular taste that i can’t quite define here regardless that is it before you buy a very quick one you know how this goes by now i’ll give you some pros some cons and some personal opinion and now i want to hear yours down in the comments.
